GENERAL:
That would be lovely. But who do we sell them too?
The properties and licences in which we work have an extremely limited appeal and as such do not easily lend themselves to the costs of mass toy production. It is a constant struggle to manufacture such low volume product using high volume methods while keeping the pricing affordable. Manufacturing in low volume makes the product significantly more expense. The tooling cost is the same whether you produce 2000 units, or 200,000 units. The cost must still be divided between each unit. Lower volume – higher unit cost.
Example of overestimating sales volume:
In 2006 we decided what the world needed was a 12” Talking Kenneth Williams Action Figure from Carry On Cleo. Without testing our market first, we went into full production of 5000 figures at a cost of £38,000 – We sold 267 of them.
After incurring months of additional storage cost, the remaining 4,733 were sold as “clearance “to TK Maxx for a fraction of the production cost losing the company nearly £20,000. Important – know the size of your target audience!
For the reasons detailed above.
As fans ourselves, we would quite happily produce every spaceship, every vehicle, and every figure imaginable as we would love to add them to our own collections.
Unfortunately, it is simple maths: there is a minimum quantity we can have manufactured and therefore a financial investment. We must be confident that investment can be recouped in the form of sales prior to committing to a specific item.
